Florentina Gonzalo: a life dedicated to SIGNIS

When we think of the stories that shape institutions, we inevitably find people whose work, dedication, and humanity leave indelible traces. Today, we say goodbye to one of those people: Florentina Gonzalo, who, after decades of commitment to SIGNIS, is taking the road to retirement.

Florentina began her journey in April 1986 in OCIC. Her first days were marked by technical tasks, such as classifying texts and working on the Spanish revision of the newsletter.
However, her restless spirit and learning ability quickly led her to take on various responsibilities. From invoices to the Association’s accounting and human resources management, Florentina built a solid career based on effort and dedication: “That’s how she began a long, happy journey,” she recalls, with the humility that has always characterized her.

Among her most precious memories are the international congresses that defined the history of SIGNIS. From Rome in 2001, when OCIC and Unda merged, to Chiang Mai (Thailand), she experienced wonderful moments that nourished her spirit. However, his story is not only about world events but also about the personal bonds he forged along the way: “I have worked in good company, some colleagues, others who are now friends,” she confesses, reminding us that, beyond work, it is people who fill our days with meaning.
SIGNIS has not just been a workplace for Florentina; it has been her second family. More than figures and documents, her legacy lies in the countless lives she touched with her dedication and warmth. “You can’t work for so many years without feeling something very deep and forever,” she says with a sparkle in her eyes that speaks of a genuine love for our Association.

Like any great story, Florentina’s was not without its challenges. One of the hardest moments was the move from the emblematic office on Rue Royale, an experience she described as exhausting but enriching because the team’s unity enabled her to overcome every obstacle.
Although her last years at SIGNIS were not exactly as she had imagined, she found in Maria Chiara De Lorenzo a friend, “a very special person, who came with all her will, always giving more and more without ever giving up and looking for ways out and options.” Together, they faced administrative challenges and closed important chapters, leaving as a testimony of their efforts the merger of SIGNIS with the Foundation and the dissolution of the office in Brussels, “thank you very much, friend,” Florentina dedicates to her, making it clear that even in difficult times, human support made the difference.

Today, at the end of this stage, Florentina leaves us reflecting on the future of SIGNIS. In her words, the road ahead is in the hands of new technologies, youth, and that global network that combines innovation and legacy. Although her absence will be irreplaceable, her “large database”—not only of contacts but also of memories and experiences—remains an invaluable resource for all of us who had the fortune to share this journey with her.
Florentina, your story inspires us. Thank you for teaching us that true success is our impact on others. We bid you farewell with gratitude and affection, knowing that your imprint in SIGNIS will be eternal. Happy new stage in your life!
