SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communication, expresses its concern regarding recent political developments in Romania, as revealed by the Romanian Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT). The findings point to cyberattacks aimed at undermining the integrity of the electoral process and preferential treatment granted on social media platforms, raising serious questions about the fairness and transparency of the democratic process.
The possible manipulative deployment of social media platforms during the electoral process, the instrumentalization of Christian faith as a political vehicle, and the alarming threats directed at journalists greatly concern our association, which has as its mission the use of media to promote human dignity, justice and reconciliation.
Such actions as described by the CSAT not only erode the integrity of democratic values but also undermine fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and the independence of the press—principles that remain essential to the flourishing of an informed and ethical society. This echoes broader efforts to safeguard the dignity and resilience of democratic systems, as exemplified in the Church’s historic commitments to transparency, dialogue, and the common good.
The Catholic Church upholds the importance of free and responsible media as a vital means of promoting truth and transparency: “The proper exercise of this right demands that the content of the communication be true and, within the limits set by justice and charity, complete. Furthermore, it should be communicated honestly and properly” (Inter Mirifica).
SIGNIS actively safeguards and advocates for these values globally, recognizing them as fundamental principles for a Christian society.
Pope Francis emphasizes the noble role of political engagement when directed toward the common good and the service of others: “Politics, though often denigrated, remains a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good” (Evangelii Gaudium).
SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communication, expresses its solidarity with the people of Romania during these challenging times and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the fundamental values of democracy, human dignity, and freedom of expression.
